Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the recruitment process cost?
The recruitment process for superyachts has always been, and will continue to be, completely free for crew members, as outlined by the MLC. The superyacht covers your hiring fee. If you’re ever asked to pay a fee by a recruiter, be cautious—it’s likely a scam.
What are the basic courses required to join a superyacht?
At a minimum, you must complete your STCW95 and pass your ENG 1. Many yachts also require you to have completed the relevant ISPS (The International Ship & Port Security Code) course.
How can I stand out amongst other crew?
Like any industry, having a diverse skill set is advantageous. While there are specific yachting courses offered by accredited training organizations, skills in areas such as diving, videography, editing, engine maintenance, and hospitality can also be beneficial and make you stand out among candidates.
Our top recommendation is to obtain your B1/B2 visa as soon as possible, as wait times can be lengthy. The sooner you secure an appointment, the better! This will put you at the front of the line for jobs on vessels heading to the United States.
Why do superyacht wages vary so much?
Although there are salary guidelines and industry standards for yachting wages, earnings can vary significantly. Several factors contribute to this, including:
–The size of the yacht
–Whether it is charter or private
–Whether a Certificate of Competency (COC) is required for minimum manning
–The level of experience needed for the role
–Whether the position is a solo department role
I do not have a yachting style CV yet, can i still register?
Definitely! Create your profile, then reach out to us, and we’ll provide you with a resume template that you can easily customize to craft your ideal CV. Keep in mind that yachting CVs need a headshot, typically taken from the shoulders up, wearing a collared shirt, with a plain or marine-style background.
What benefits are usually included on a superyacht?
In addition to your wage (typically paid biweekly), you’ll receive a healthcare plan, accommodation, paid holidays, all meals and snacks, uniform, shoes, and toiletries. The superyacht will also cover your flights to and from the vessel.
What kind of work life balance exists onboard?
Working on a superyacht can be demanding, but generous leave packages are typically offered, which improve with tenure. A minimum of four weeks off per year is standard, but it’s increasingly common to start with 60-90 days of leave. Once you obtain your COC in your specific department, you may transition to a 2-month on, 2-month off rotation.
Where is the best place to look for a job?
The answer to this question varies by season and by the yacht. Most boats will recruit globally for the right candidate, but they may be less willing to invest in long-distance flights for inexperienced crew members. Therefore, it’s best to be based in the Mediterranean from March to June, while October to February is more favorable on the East Coast of the United States or in the Caribbean. Just be mindful of hurricane season!
