Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the recruitment process cost?
The superyacht recruitment process has always been and will always be completely free to crew members as stipulated by MLC, the Superyacht itself pays your hiring fee. If you are ever confronted for a fee from a recruiter beware as it is a scam.
What are the basic courses required to join a superyacht?
As a bare minimum you will need to have taken your STCW95 and have passed your ENG 1. Often yachts will also require you to have taken the appropriate ISPS course.
How can i stand out amongst other crew?
As with any industry the more broad your skill base is the better. Whilst specific yachting courses are available through registered training organisations other skills like diving, videography, editing, specific engine courses and hospitality related courses are also very helpful and will aid you in being put forward over other candidates.
Our biggest piece of advice however would be to get your B1/B2 visa as soon as you can, wait times can be long so the earlier you secure the appointment the better! This will have you first in line when it comes to a job on a Vessel set to enter the United states.
Why do superyacht wages vary so much?
Whilst there are salary guidelines and industry standards for yachting wages available, wages can vary greatly. This is due to a number of factors these include:
-Size of the yacht
-Whether its charter or private
-Whether a COC is required for minimum manning
-How much experience the role requires
-If the role is a solo department role
I do not have a yachting style CV yet, can i still register?
Absolutely! Go ahead and create your profile then contact us and we will send you a resume template you can easily edit to create your perfect CV. Remember Yachting CVs require a headshot, usually taken in a collared shirt, shoulders and above with a plain or marine style background preferably.
What benefits are usually included on a superyacht?
Besides a wage (usually paid fortnightly) you will also be provided with a healthcare plan, accomodation, paid holidays, all meals and snacks, uniform, shoes and toiletries. The superyacht will also be responsible for your flights both to and from the Vessel.
What kind of work life balance exists onboard?
Working on a supeyacht can be tough however generous leave packages are usually included which improve with longevity. A minimum of 4 weeks a year is required however its more commonplace today to start between 60-90 days and end up on a 2 month on 2 month off rotation once you have your COC in your relevant department.
Where is the best place to look for a job?
The answer to this question changes with the seasons but also with the boat. Most boat will recruit worldwide for the right candidate but will be more reluctant to spend money on a long distance flight for green crew members. Therefore March/April until june would be better to be based in the Mediterranean where as October to February could find you better positioned on the east coast of the United States or Caribbean. Just keep an eye out for hurricanes.
